The French Republic, a committed partner in the Caribbean
On Friday April 9, 2021 at 8:41 am, the La Soufrière volcano on the island of Saint-Vincent and the Grenadines exploded, releasing particularly thick clouds of smoke and ash.
A volcanic eruption is likely to cause deterioration in the quality of the air, due to the release of ash and toxic gases. The quality of life and security can also be affected. Scientists estimate that the volcanic eruption could last several days or even weeks.
France has mobilized its representations in the Caribbean and started the cooperation and relief process.
Tomorrow a military vessel will be arriving in the capitol of the island with experts to provide technical assistance, based on the local needs. The French Red Cross has also prepared a first shipment of 24m³ goods and necessary supplies : food stocks, PPE, camping beds and various donations from different organizations. Other ships are on standby to be of service whenever needed.
The cooperation among (regional) medical services has increased and they are on high alert with regard to the needs and possibilities for extending medical assistance and service despite the Covid-19 pandemic./
