Maritime border delimitation meeting
The French and Surinamese delegation for the delimitation of the maritime border met in Cayenne, French Guiana, at the Prefecture on the 8th and 9th of April 2015 to discuss the delimitation of the maritime border between Suriname and France. The delegations were headed by Mr. Pierre BOUSSAROQUE, Deputy director of judicial affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of France and Ambassador John Harold KOLADER of Suriname.
The delegations were welcomed by the Préfet of French Guiana, Mr. Eric SPITZ, and Captain Christophe BOIN, Maritime Area Commander.
Since the last meeting of the delegations in June 2013, when it was decided that in complement with the maritime border agreement a political declaration shall be issued, a lot of progress has been made. The present meeting has taken into account the interests of all stakeholders, amongst others the interests of the local riparian communities on the estuary of the Maroni/Marowijne river.
After open and friendly discussions a final draft of the political declaration as well as the draft text of the maritime agreement have been initialed.
The finalization of the process is scheduled to be done through the diplomatic channels.
