CORONAVIRUS EPIDEMIC IN FRENCH GUYANA

COVID-19 virus confirmed near Grand-Santi

Today several samples were taken from people residing within the area of Grand-
Santi and these were analyzed in the laboratory. 9 of them are covid19 positive. These are people who were in close contact with a covid-19 confirmed patient from Saint-Laurent du Maroni. The patient was declared covid-19 positive last Sunday and had been present in the kampoe (camp site) during his period of contagiousness.

As early as Sunday evening, an epidemiological investigation was launched to try to identify the source of the contamination of the individual and analyze all of his activities during the previous days. It was then, that it was decided to carry out a screening operation in the concerned kampoe. Without waiting for the results, the kampoe was put in containment, in order to avoid a possible spread of the virus in the surrounding villages.
The positive results of the day will lead to maintain this confinement during the entire period of contagiousness of the inhabitants concerned, and a very close health and sanitary surveillance will be ensured.

Starting tomorrow, an active search for other symptomatic people in this area will be performed. The Surinamese authorities have been notified in order to coordinate actions and take preventive measures.

In order to anticipate the confinement of the residents of Tonka Kampoe, a canoe chartered by the community of Grand-Santi, left in the early afternoon with food aid packages, as well as a stock of fresh fruit and vegetables for about three weeks, as part of the food aid provided by the State, coordinated in the western part of French Guyana by the sub-prefecture of Saint-Laurent du Maroni.
This aid will be renewed if necessary, particularly with regard to hygiene products. The same canoe is also transporting 250 surgical masks made available by the State services for the community of Grand-Santi, mainly for the municipal staff.
The canoe of the sub-prefecture is also available to the National Gendarmerie to ensure the transport of freight and gendarmes to Grand-Santi and allow effective monitoring of compliance with the quarantine period. Reinforcements of mobile gendarmes and reservists have also arrived and will be present for several weeks in the territory.

State services would like to emphasize the availability of the Hotel du fleuve for patients declared positive who wish to spend their quarantine in a suitable place, with medical monitoring, but especially to avoid contact with loved ones to protect them and prevent the spread of the virus.
